How to open a Korean bank account as a foreigner

4 min read

Almost everything else in Korea waits on this one. Your salary, your rent, your phone bill and every reward you earn all need somewhere to land, and most of them cannot be paid to a foreign account.

The good news: with a Residence Card in hand, opening an account takes about thirty minutes.

What to bring

Take all of these to the branch, even if a friend tells you two are enough. Branch staff have discretion, and being one document short means coming back tomorrow.

  • Your Residence Card (외국인등록증), or your passport plus a certificate of residence report if the card has not arrived yet
  • Your passport
  • Proof of why you need the account — an employment contract, a certificate of enrolment from your university, or a business card
  • A Korean phone number registered in your own name
  • Your address in Korea, written down in Korean if you can

That phone number matters more than people expect. Almost every Korean banking service verifies you by text, and a number in someone else's name will block you from online banking later even if the account opens fine.

Choosing a branch, not a bank

The differences between the major banks — KB Kookmin, Shinhan, Woori, Hana, NH Nonghyup — matter far less than the branch you walk into.

Look for a branch near a university, an industrial complex, or a neighbourhood with many foreign residents. Staff there open accounts for foreigners every week, know which form to use, and often have someone who speaks English, Chinese or Vietnamese. A quiet suburban branch may take an hour longer and still get it wrong.

Some banks also run dedicated foreign-customer centres in Seoul with interpreters on site. If your Korean is limited and your schedule allows, they are worth the trip.

Expect a limited account first

This surprises almost everyone. Your first account will probably be a limited-transaction account (한도계좌): typically a cap of around one million won per day on transfers and ATM withdrawals.

This is not discrimination, and arguing at the counter will not lift it. Korean banks apply the same restriction to Korean customers who cannot show a clear reason for a high-value account — it exists because of financial-fraud rules.

To lift the cap, bring evidence that money will genuinely flow through the account:

  • A signed employment contract or a certificate of employment
  • Payslips showing salary paid into that account
  • A utility bill or lease in your name
  • A certificate of enrolment, for students

Usually two or three months of salary arriving is enough. Ask your branch what they specifically need, then come back with it rather than trying a different bank — you will only get another limited account.

Set up online banking on the same visit

Do not leave the branch without it. Ask for:

  • The mobile banking app, installed and logged in before you go
  • A security card or OTP device — the app alone will not authorise larger transfers
  • A digital certificate (공동인증서 or the bank's own equivalent), which many Korean services still require

Once you are outside the branch, fixing any of this remotely is far harder than doing it while someone is sitting across the desk from you.

A practical order of operations

If you are newly arrived, this sequence saves the most backtracking. Each step needs the one before it, which is why doing them out of order usually means doing at least one of them twice.

The order to do things in: Residence Card, then phone number, then bank account, then payroll details, then lift the limit 1. ResidenceCard 2. Phone, inyour name 3. Bankaccount 4. Give it topayroll 5. Lift thelimit Steps 1–3 take a morning each. Step 5 needs two or three months of income first.
The bank asks for the card and the phone number, and the limit lifts on evidence that arrives later.
The one that catches people A phone number in a friend's name works for calls and fails for banking. Korean verification checks that the name on the number matches the name on the account, so a borrowed number blocks online banking even after the account opens correctly.

Where this trips people up

A number in a friend's name. It works for calls and fails for banking. Get your own, even if it costs more.

Waiting for a card that has not arrived. If your Residence Card is still being processed, the residence report receipt is often accepted. Ask before assuming you have to wait.

Assuming the limit is permanent. It is not, and it lifts on evidence rather than on time.
